It is that time of year where we throw away our calendars for a fresh new one. Whether yours is kittens playing in boxes, babies dressed like flowers, or Victoria secret models traipsing around islands, it's the time of year when we reflect on our fortune, ready to label the year as good or bad, resolving to improve upon the next. And why not? Why not take all the mishaps, bad relationships, car wrecks, workplace drama, and blame them on 365 days of bad luck and seal it with a kiss. It makes us feel better. It gives us hope. We can resolve to do better, experience better, and be better than we did this kittens playing in boxes time around. Fuck that! Fuck being better next year! The idealized agenda of ringing in the new year with a special kiss is too easily defeated by the drunk couple fights and underwhelming parties working against it. Fuck the hype! Fuck kissing 2010 goodbye! Fuck Kissing 2011 hello. Today is a day upon the cusp between our past and our future but why not just celebrate the present. Why celebrate who you can be when you can celebrate who you are?
Take the day to reflect upon who you are. Be very comfortable with that person. Celebrate that. The honest truth is that resolutions won't change that person. You'll stop smoking, stop letting that guy/girl treat you that way, and be happier with your job when you appropriately grow into that person. Don't delude yourself with false promises and a binging flurry of guilty pleasures because today is just a day and a kiss is just a kiss. But celebrate with who you are with and kiss who you will kiss. My "bestie" best friend told me today that if you focus on the flaws of the person you are with and want someone new, then you'll only find yourself with someone new with new faults. The very same advice goes for yourself. Don't focus on the faults of your past or the shiny new traits of your future. Be you. Right now be you. And like it.
To quote Kung Fu Panda, "the past is history, the future is a mystery, but right now is a gift. That's why they call it the present". Cheers to you all, party safe, and High Five your life
Happy Fucken New Year
